Be Still and Know

"Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10

It's a verse that is often quoted on journal covers, t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. It tends to bring to mind idyllic circumstances and serene settings. But when examined in the context of the entire Psalm, the setting is anything but serene.

The language used throughout Psalm 46 is strong and commanding, very war-like in nature. It speaks of natural disasters, battles, and kingdoms falling -- chaos all through the earth. It's hardly the picturesque scene of stillness!

Yet the prevalent message woven throughout the Psalm is that there is peace in the presence, love, sovereignty, and glory of Almighty God. It's not about being still FROM the battle.  It's about being still IN the battle.

That's the message God has been teaching me this past year. Despite the chaos of life changes, frequent travel, and even a few health set-backs, my spirit learned how to BE STILL AND KNOW HIM. How to rest in Him alone. How to be quiet internally when surrounded by noise.

Then these lessons quite unexpectedly became a new Bible study for women called "The Weapon of Peace" which will be released this fall, so stay tuned for more details!

If you are in a loud, chaotic season of life, I encourage you to read Psalm 46 daily. Meditate on the powerful truths proclaimed in these 11 verses. Memorize them. Rest in them.

Be still and know that He is God.
